Planning access before the first machine arrives

Heavy equipment is only useful once it’s on the ground and working. Between the yard and the cut there is a route, a gate, a turning circle and a patch of soil that has to carry sixty tonnes. Plan those first and the delivery takes care of itself.
Map the approach route
Low-loaders need width, height clearance and a place to stop without blocking traffic. Walk or drive the last kilometre, note overhead lines, tight bends and soft verges, and share the route with the haulage crew before the truck leaves.
Ground conditions and unloading space
A machine that tracks off a trailer onto saturated ground stays there. Prepare a compacted pad, keep it level, and give the operator at least one and a half machine lengths to swing clear of the ramps.
When access is planned, the first machine arrives, unloads and starts working within the hour. When it isn’t, the whole programme slides by a day.
Keep the route live after delivery
Access planning continues after the low-loader has left. Inspect the route each morning, especially after rain or heavy traffic, and make repairs before ruts or soft shoulders limit the next delivery.
Coordinate every gate
Confirm gate hours, security procedures, and a named contact for arrivals. Small access details are often the difference between a controlled delivery and a truck waiting on the road.
Plan for the people around the plant
A workable plan accounts for people as carefully as it accounts for machines. Separate pedestrian routes from plant movement, give spotters clear positions, and make sure everyone understands where visibility is limited. Safe separation is easiest to achieve before the site becomes busy.
Review the plan as work evolves. Stockpiles move, temporary roads change, and new trades arrive. A site plan is a live operating document, not a drawing that should remain untouched after the first day.
