The operator’s checklist for a faster start

Most delays on a site don’t start with the machine. They start in the ten minutes before it moves — a missed fluid check, a loose track, a bucket that was never rated for the material. A consistent pre-start routine is the cheapest insurance an operator can carry.
Walk the machine before you climb it
A full walk-around takes under three minutes. Look for hydraulic weeps, track tension, cracked hoses and anything left on the deck. Check that the attachment pins are seated and that the quick coupler is locked. If something looks off, it usually is.
Fluids, filters, and the first warm-up
Engine oil, coolant and hydraulic levels should be checked cold, on level ground. Let the engine idle until operating temperature before loading the hydraulics — cold oil under load is the fastest way to shorten pump life on a modern excavator.
Finish by cycling every function once with no load. If the routine becomes habit, the machine tells you what it needs before it fails — and the day starts on time.
A clean handover protects the routine
Before taking a machine from another operator, review the shift notes, walk the work area together where possible, and confirm any limitations that were identified. This short exchange turns site knowledge into a safer first hour.
Record what changes
A simple record of fuel use, warning lights, ground conditions, and attachment changes builds a useful history. It helps service teams identify patterns before a small issue becomes downtime.
Turn habits into evidence
A good field routine becomes more valuable when it is recorded consistently. A short end-of-shift note should capture the work completed, the machine condition, any unusual sounds or behaviour, and the action needed before the next shift. This gives the incoming operator a useful starting point and gives the wider team a reliable view of asset health.
The aim is not to create paperwork for its own sake. It is to make sure that the knowledge gathered close to the work does not disappear when the engine shuts down. Over time, those notes reveal recurring conditions, help plan parts, and make each pre-start conversation sharper.
